Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) Shallum.--Josiah's successor appears in the historical books as Jehoahaz ("Jehovah sustains," meant as a nomen et omen), the latter being probably the name assumed on his succession to the throne. Such changes were common at the time, as in the case of Jehoiakim and Zedekiah (2Kings 23:34; 2Kings 24:17). Shallum (= retribution) might probably have seemed a name of evil augury. In 1Chronicles 3:15 a Shallum appears as the fourth son of Josiah, Jehoiakim being the second, and one otherwise unknown, Johanan, the eldest. This may have been the same as the one now referred to (the order of the last two names being in some way inverted), or there may have been two brothers bearing the same name. The short and disastrous reign of Shallum, and the meaning of the word probably account for the prophet's using the private rather than the kingly name. The fact that the name had been borne by one of the later kings of Israel whose reign lasted but for a single month (2Kings 15:13) may have given a further point to its use, as being full of disastrous memories that made it ominous of evil. The title "king of Judah" belongs grammatically to Shallum, not to Josiah.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewForכִּ֣י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionthis is whatכֹ֣ה (ḵōh)AdverbStrong's 3541: Like this, thus, here, nowthe LORDיְ֠הוָה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelsaysאָֽמַר־ (’ā·mar-)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayconcerningאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toShallumשַׁלֻּ֨ם (šal·lum)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 7967: Shallum -- the name of a number of Israelitessonבֶּן־ (ben-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Josiah,יֹאשִׁיָּ֜הוּ (yō·šî·yā·hū)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 2977: Josiah -- 'Yah supports', two Israeliteskingמֶ֣לֶךְ (me·leḵ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4428: A kingof Judah,יְהוּדָ֗ה (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four Israeliteswho succeededהַמֹּלֵךְ֙ (ham·mō·lêḵ)Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 4427: To reign, inceptively, to ascend the throne, to induct into royalty, to take counselhis fatherאָבִ֔יו (’ā·ḇîw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 1: FatherJosiahיֹאשִׁיָּ֣הוּ (yō·šî·yā·hū)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 2977: Josiah -- 'Yah supports', two Israelites[but] has gone forthיָצָ֖א (yā·ṣā)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3318: To go, bring, out, direct and proximfromמִן־ (min-)PrepositionStrong's 4480: A part of, from, out ofthisהַזֶּ֑ה (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatplace:הַמָּק֣וֹם (ham·mā·qō·wm)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4725: A standing, a spot, a condition‘He will neverלֹֽא־ (lō-)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noreturn,יָשׁ֥וּב (yā·šūḇ)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7725: To turn back, in, to retreat, againJump to PreviousForth Hither Instead Josiah Judah Regard Reigned Reigning Shallum Succeeded Thither Touching Turn
