For as a band goes tightly round a man's body, so I made all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah tightly united to me; so that they might be a people for me and a name and a praise and a glory: but they would not give ear.

Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) The whole house of Israel.--The acted parable takes in not only, as in Jeremiah 13:9, Judah, to whom the warning was specially addressed, but the other great division of the people. The sense of national unity is still strong in the prophet's mind. Not Judah only, but the whole collective Israel had been as the girdle of Jehovah, consecrated to His service, designed to be, as the girdle was to man, a praise and glory (Deuteronomy 26:19).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewForכִּ֡י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionjust asכַּאֲשֶׁר֩ (ka·’ă·šer)Preposition-k | Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thata loinclothהָאֵז֜וֹר (hā·’ê·zō·wr)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 232: Something girt, a belt, a bandclingsיִדְבַּ֨ק (yiḏ·baq)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1692: To impinge, cling, adhere, to catch by pursuittoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toa man’sאִ֗ישׁ (’îš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personwaist,מָתְנֵי־ (mā·ṯə·nê-)Noun - mdcStrong's 4975: The waist, small of the back, the loinsso {I have made}כֵּ֣ן (kên)AdverbStrong's 3651: So -- thusthe wholeכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyhouseבֵּ֨ית (bêṯ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1004: A houseof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descandוְאֶת־ (wə·’eṯ-)Conjunctive waw | Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative casethe wholeכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyhouseבֵּ֤ית (bêṯ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1004: A houseof Judahיְהוּדָה֙ (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four Israelitesclingהִדְבַּ֣קְתִּי (hiḏ·baq·tî)Verb - Hifil - Perfect - first person common singularStrong's 1692: To impinge, cling, adhere, to catch by pursuitto Me,אֵ֠לַי (’ê·lay)Preposition | first person common singularStrong's 413: Near, with, among, todeclaresנְאֻם־ (nə·’um-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5002: An oraclethe LORD,יְהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelso that they might beלִֽהְי֥וֹת (lih·yō·wṯ)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, beMy peopleלְעָ֔ם (lə·‘ām)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5971: A people, a tribe, troops, attendants, a flockfor My renownוּלְשֵׁ֥ם (ū·lə·šêm)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 8034: A nameand praiseוְלִתְהִלָּ֖ה (wə·liṯ·hil·lāh)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 8416: Praise, song of praiseand glory?וּלְתִפְאָ֑רֶת (ū·lə·ṯip̄·’ā·reṯ)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 8597: Beauty, glorybut they did notוְלֹ֖א (wə·lō)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nolisten.שָׁמֵֽעוּ׃ (šā·mê·‘ū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlyJump to PreviousBelt Caused Cleave Cleaves Cleaveth Cling Clings Declares Girdle Glory Hear Hearken House Household Israel Judah Loins Praise Renown Waist Waistband Waistcloth Whole
