Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(14) Every beast.--Heb., every living thing (as in Genesis 8:1), but probably we are to supply "of the field," and thus it would mean the wild animals. The cattle--Behemah. (See Note on Genesis 1:24.)Creeping thing.--Not specially reptiles, but alt small animals (see ibid.). The last clause literally is, every fowl after its kind, every bird, every wing; whence some understand it as meaning three kinds of winged beings: birds generally, next singing-birds, and lastly, bats, insects, and other such creatures. It more probably means "birds of all sorts."Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewtheyהֵ֜מָּה (hêm·māh)Pronoun - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1992: Theyandוְכָל־ (wə·ḵāl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyeveryוְכָל־ (wə·ḵāl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everykind ofלְמִינָ֗הּ (lə·mî·nāh)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 4327: A sort, specieswild animal,הַֽחַיָּ֣ה (ha·ḥay·yāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2416: Alive, raw, fresh, strong, lifelivestock,הַבְּהֵמָה֙ (hab·bə·hê·māh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 929: A dumb beast, any large quadruped, animalcrawling creature,הָרֶ֛מֶשׂ (hā·re·meś)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 7431: A reptile, any other rapidly moving animalbird,הָע֣וֹף (hā·‘ō·wp̄)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5775: Flying creaturesandכֹּ֖ל (kōl)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everywinged creature.צִפּ֥וֹר (ṣip·pō·wr)Noun - common singular constructStrong's 6833: A little birdJump to PreviousAnimal Beast Bird Birds Cattle Creature Creepeth Creeping Creeps Earth Fowl Kind Kinds Livestock Moves Sort Sorts Wild
