Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(24) His bow abode in strength.--The word for strength is highly poetical. It means that which goes on for ever, like the flowing streams or the eternal hills. In spite of all the machinations of his enemies, the bow of Joseph remained constant and enduring in its might. Were made strong.--The Hebrew word is difficult, but more probably means, were pliant, supple, such as the arms of an archer ought to be.From thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel.--The Jewish commentators understand "from thence" of Joseph, who had become the ruler and protector of Israel. But "from thence" answers in the parallelism to from the hands of. Fully it would be, from thence where dwells the Shepherd, &c, that is,--Joseph's triumph came from God, who is the Shepherd (or Ruler) and the Rock of Israel.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewYet he steadiedוַתֵּ֤שֶׁב (wat·tê·šeḇ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryhis bow,קַשְׁתּ֔וֹ (qaš·tōw)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 7198: A bow, for, shooting, the irisand his strong armsזְרֹעֵ֣י (zə·rō·‘ê)Noun - feminine plural constructStrong's 2220: The arm, the foreleg, forcewere temperedוַיָּפֹ֖זּוּ (way·yā·p̄ōz·zū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 6339: To solidify, to springby the handsמִידֵי֙ (mî·ḏê)Preposition-m | Noun - fdcStrong's 3027: A handof the Mighty Oneאֲבִ֣יר (’ă·ḇîr)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 46: Mightyof Jacob,יַעֲקֹ֔ב (ya·‘ă·qōḇ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3290: Jacob -- a son of Isaac, also his descin the name ofמִשָּׁ֥ם (miš·šām)Preposition-m | AdverbStrong's 8033: There, then, thitherthe Shepherd,רֹעֶ֖ה (rō·‘eh)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 7462: To tend a, flock, pasture it, in, to graze, to rule, to associate withthe Rockאֶ֥בֶן (’e·ḇen)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 68: A stoneof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descJump to PreviousAbode Agile Arms Bow Bows Broken Cords Firm Hand Hands Israel Jacob Mighty Rock Shepherd Steady Stone Strength Strong Supple Thence Unmoved Whence
