Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(14) There they shall lay their garments.--It was apparently the requirement of the law that the priests should wear their official garments only when engaged in priestly duties within the tabernacle; this is not expressly stated in general terms, but it is said that they were to wear them when engaged in such duty (Exodus 28:43), and in some particular cases that they were to put them off when they went out of the tabernacle (Leviticus 6:10-11; Leviticus 16:23). It seems probable, therefore, that Ezekiel here recognises the ancient custom.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewOnce the priestsהַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים (hak·kō·hă·nîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 3548: Priesthave enteredבְּבֹאָ֣ם (bə·ḇō·’ām)Preposition-b | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, gothe holy area,מֵהַקֹּ֙דֶשׁ֙ (mê·haq·qō·ḏeš)Preposition-m, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6944: A sacred place, thing, sanctitythey must notוְלֹֽא־ (wə·lō-)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nogo outיֵצְא֤וּ (yê·ṣə·’ū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 3318: To go, bring, out, direct and proximintoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe outerהַחִיצוֹנָ֔ה (ha·ḥî·ṣō·w·nāh)Article | Adjective - feminine singularStrong's 2435: The, wall side, exterior, secularcourtהֶחָצֵ֣ר (he·ḥā·ṣêr)Article | Noun - common singularStrong's 2691: A yard, a hamletuntil they have left behindיַנִּ֧יחוּ (yan·nî·ḥū)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 3240: Bestow, cast down, lay down, up, leave off, let alone remain, pacify, place, the garmentsבִגְדֵיהֶ֛ם (ḇiḡ·ḏê·hem)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 899: A covering, clothing, treachery, pillagein which they minister,יְשָׁרְת֥וּ (yə·šā·rə·ṯū)Verb - Piel - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 8334: To attend as a, menial, worshipper, to contribute toforכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctiontheseהֵ֑נָּה (hên·nāh)Pronoun - third person feminine pluralStrong's 2007: Themselvesare holy.קֹ֣דֶשׁ (qō·ḏeš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6944: A sacred place, thing, sanctityThey are to put onוְלָבְשׁוּ֙ (wə·lā·ḇə·šū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 3847: Wrap around, to put on a, garment, clotheotherאֲחֵרִ֔ים (’ă·ḥê·rîm)Adjective - masculine pluralStrong's 312: Hinder, next, otherclothesבְּגָדִ֣ים (bə·ḡā·ḏîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 899: A covering, clothing, treachery, pillagebefore they approachוְקָרְב֖וּ (wə·qā·rə·ḇū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 7126: To come near, approachthe placesאֲשֶׁ֥ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatthat areאֲשֶׁר־ (’ă·šer-)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatfor the people.?לָעָֽם׃ (lā·‘ām)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5971: A people, a tribe, troops, attendants, a flockJump to PreviousApproach Clothing Court Enter Forth Garments Holy House Lay Minister Once Outer Pertaineth Pertains Precincts Priests Robes Sanctuary Square Therein Utter Wherein Work
