Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(6) A fire on Magog.--Magog is the country of Gog (Ezekiel 38:1), and the Divine judgment is to fall therefore not only upon the army in the land of Israel, but also upon the far-distant country of Gog. In Revelation 20:9 this fire is represented as coming "down from God out of heaven."In the isles.--This common Scriptural expression for the remoter parts of the earth is added here to show the universality of the judgment upon all that is hostile to the kingdom of God.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewI will sendוְשִׁלַּחְתִּי־ (wə·šil·laḥ·tî-)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 7971: To send away, for, outfireאֵ֣שׁ (’êš)Noun - common singularStrong's 784: A fireagainst Magogבְּמָג֔וֹג (bə·mā·ḡō·wḡ)Preposition-b | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 4031: Magog -- perhaps 'land of Gog', a son of Japheth, also his descendants and their landand those who dwellוּבְיֹשְׁבֵ֥י (ū·ḇə·yō·šə·ḇê)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-b | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marrysecurelyלָבֶ֑טַח (lā·ḇe·ṭaḥ)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 983: A place of refuge, safety, safelyin the coastlands,הָאִיִּ֖ים (hā·’î·yîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 339: A habitable spot, dry land, a coast, an islandand they will knowוְיָדְע֖וּ (wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 3045: To knowthatכִּי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionIאֲנִ֥י (’ă·nî)Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 589: Iam the LORD.יְהוָֽה׃ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of IsraelJump to PreviousCarelessly Coastlands Confident Dwell Ease Fear Fire Inhabit Inhabitants Islands Isles Live Magog Safely Safety Sea-Lands Securely
