Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(19) Which is in the hand of Ephraim.--Again Joseph is put for the whole ten tribes, and again it is indicated that the control of these was chiefly with Ephraim. The human power, which led to and perpetuated the division, is in contrast with the "mine hand," where all shall be re-united under Divine rule. Will put them.--Grammatically the plural pronoun "them" refers to the piece of wood, which is in the singular; but the construction is according to the sense, the wood representing the ten tribes.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewyou are to tellדַּבֵּ֣ר (dab·bêr)Verb - Piel - Imperative - masculine singularStrong's 1696: To arrange, to speak, to subduethemאֲלֵהֶ֗ם (’ă·lê·hem)Preposition | third person masculine pluralStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothat this is whatכֹּֽה־ (kōh-)AdverbStrong's 3541: Like this, thus, here, nowthe Lordאֲדֹנָ֣י (’ă·ḏō·nāy)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 136: The LordGODיְהוִה֒ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHsays:אָמַר֮ (’ā·mar)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say‘Iאֲנִ֨י (’ă·nî)Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 589: Iwill takeלֹקֵ֜חַ (lō·qê·aḥ)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 3947: To takethe stickעֵ֤ץ (‘êṣ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 6086: Tree, trees, woodof Joseph,יוֹסֵף֙ (yō·w·sêp̄)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3130: Joseph -- 'he increases', a son of Jacob, also the name of several Israeliteswhichאֲשֶׁ֣ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatis in the handבְּיַד־ (bə·yaḏ-)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 3027: A handof Ephraim,אֶפְרַ֔יִם (’ep̄·ra·yim)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 669: Ephraim -- a son of Joseph, also his descendants and their territoryand the tribesוְשִׁבְטֵ֥י (wə·šiḇ·ṭê)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 7626: Rod, staff, club, scepter, tribeof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descassociated with him,חֲבֵרָ֑יו (ḥă·ḇê·rāw)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2270: United, associate, companionand I will putוְנָתַתִּי֩ (wə·nā·ṯat·tî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setthemאוֹתָ֨ם (’ō·w·ṯām)Direct object marker | third person masculine pluralStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative casetogether withעָלָ֜יו (‘ā·lāw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe stickעֵ֣ץ (‘êṣ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 6086: Tree, trees, woodof Judah.יְהוּדָ֗ה (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four IsraelitesI will makeוַֽעֲשִׂיתִם֙ (wa·‘ă·śî·ṯim)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singular | third person masculine pluralStrong's 6213: To do, makethem into a singleאֶחָ֔ד (’e·ḥāḏ)Number - masculine singularStrong's 259: United, one, firststick,לְעֵ֣ץ (lə·‘êṣ)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 6086: Tree, trees, woodand they will becomeוְהָי֥וּ (wə·hā·yū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, beoneאֶחָ֖ד (’e·ḥāḏ)Number - masculine singularStrong's 259: United, one, firstin My hand.?בְּיָדִֽי׃ (bə·yā·ḏî)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 3027: A handJump to PreviousCompanions Ephraim Fellows Hand Israel Joseph Judah Stick Together Tribes
