Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(6) My sheep wandered.--In the pronouns, my sheep and my flock, God again claims the people for His own. Without proper guides, they have indeed strayed far away from Him, and there has been none to inquire after or seek them out in their lost condition. The two words search and seek refer, the former to asking or inquiring, the latter to searching after. In such a state of things, plainly the first act of mercy to the flock must be the removal of the unfaithful shepherds. This is promised (Ezekiel 34:7-10), but, after Ezekiel's manner, with reiterated declaration of the unfaithfulness of the shepherds.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewMy flockצֹאנִי֙ (ṣō·nî)Noun - feminine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 6629: Small cattle, sheep and goats, flockwent astrayיִשְׁגּ֤וּ (yiš·gū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 7686: To stray, to mistake, to transgress, to reel, be enrapturedon allבְּכָל־ (bə·ḵāl)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe mountainsהֶ֣הָרִ֔ים (he·hā·rîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 2022: Mountain, hill, hill countryandוְעַ֖ל (wə·‘al)Conjunctive waw | PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againsteveryכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyhighרָמָ֑ה (rā·māh)Verb - Qal - Participle - feminine singularStrong's 7311: To be high actively, to rise, raisehill.גִּבְעָ֣ה (giḇ·‘āh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 1389: A hillockThey were scatteredנָפֹ֣צוּ (nā·p̄ō·ṣū)Verb - Nifal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 6327: To be dispersed or scatteredover the faceפְּנֵ֤י (pə·nê)Noun - common plural constructStrong's 6440: The faceof allכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe earth,הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (hā·’ā·reṣ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landwith no oneוְאֵ֥ין (wə·’ên)Conjunctive waw | AdverbStrong's 369: A non-entity, a negative particleto searchדּוֹרֵ֖שׁ (dō·w·rêš)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 1875: To tread, frequent, to follow, to seek, ask, to worshipor seek for them.’מְבַקֵּֽשׁ׃ (mə·ḇaq·qêš)Verb - Piel - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 1245: To search out, to strive afterJump to PreviousEarth Face Flock High Hill Inquiring Mountains Scattered Search Searched Seek Sheep Sought Surface Troubled Wandered Way Whole
