Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(26) I will make thy tongue cleave to the roof of thy mouth.--Here, under another figure, this enforced silence is attributed, not to "the rebellious house," by whom it was immediately brought about, but to God Himself, whose providence was the ultimate cause by which the prophet was placed in such circumstances. It is a way of expressing strongly the difficulties under which he was to exercise his ministry.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewI will make your tongueוּלְשֽׁוֹנְךָ֙ (ū·lə·šō·wn·ḵā)Conjunctive waw | Noun - common singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 3956: The tonguestickאַדְבִּ֣יק (’aḏ·bîq)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 1692: To impinge, cling, adhere, to catch by pursuittoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe roof of your mouth,חִכֶּ֔ךָ (ḥik·ke·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 2441: Palate, roof of the mouth, gumsand you will be silentוְנֶֽאֱלַ֔מְתָּ (wə·ne·’ĕ·lam·tā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 481: To tie fast, to be tongue-tiedand unableוְלֹא־ (wə·lō-)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noto rebuke them,מוֹכִ֑יחַ (mō·w·ḵî·aḥ)Verb - Hifil - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 3198: To be right, reciprocal, to argue, to decide, justify, convictthoughכִּ֛י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctiontheyהֵֽמָּה׃ (hêm·māh)Pronoun - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1992: Theyare a rebelliousמְרִ֖י (mə·rî)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4805: Bitterness, rebellion, bitter, rebellioushouse.בֵּ֥ית (bêṯ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1004: A houseJump to PreviousCause Cleave Dumb Fixed House Moreover Mouth Mute Palate Protests Rebellious Rebuke Rebukes Reprove Reprover Roof Silent Stick Tongue Unable Uncontrolled Voice
