Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(9) Engines of war.--This is now generally understood to mean battering-rams, although the word is a different one from that used in Ezekiel 4:2; Ezekiel 21:22. There are two words here which may form one compound word.Axes in the original is swords. It may either be used, the specific for the general, swords for all instruments of war; or it may be a poetic hyperbole, to express the power of the swords of Nebuchadnezzar's army--they shall even break down the towers.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewHe will directיִתֵּ֖ן (yit·tên)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setthe blowsוּמְחִ֣י (ū·mə·ḥî)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4239: A stroke, battering-ramof his battering ramsקָֽבָלּ֔וֹ (qā·ḇāl·lōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 6904: Something in front, a military siege engineagainst your wallsבְּחֹֽמוֹתָ֑יִךְ (bə·ḥō·mō·w·ṯā·yiḵ)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine plural construct | second person feminine singularStrong's 2346: A wall of protectionand tear downיִתֹּ֖ץ (yit·tōṣ)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5422: To pull down, break downyour towersוּמִ֨גְדְּלֹתַ֔יִךְ (ū·miḡ·də·lō·ṯa·yiḵ)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine plural construct | second person feminine singularStrong's 4026: A tower, a rostrum, a, bed of flowerswith his axes.בְּחַרְבוֹתָֽיו׃ (bə·ḥar·ḇō·w·ṯāw)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2719: Drought, a cutting instrument, as a, knife, swordJump to PreviousAttack Axes Battering Blow Blows Break Breaketh Broken Demolish Direct Engines Placeth Rams Shock Towers Walls War Weapons
