Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(23) Ye shall pine away.--In the tumult, distress, and captivity of the approaching judgment there would be no opportunity for the outward display of grief; but all the more should it press upon them inwardly, and, according to the terrible threatening of Leviticus 26:39, they should "pine away in their iniquity" in their enemies' land. In the original the preposition is the same here as in Leviticus, "in your iniquity."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewYour turbansוּפְאֵרֵכֶ֣ם (ū·p̄ə·’ê·rê·ḵem)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 6287: An embellishment, fancy head-dresswill remain onעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstyour headsרָאשֵׁיכֶ֗ם (rā·šê·ḵem)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 7218: The headand your sandalsוְנַֽעֲלֵיכֶם֙ (wə·na·‘ă·lê·ḵem)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 5275: A sandal tongue, a sandal, slipperon your feet.בְּרַגְלֵיכֶ֔ם (bə·raḡ·lê·ḵem)Preposition-b | Noun - fdc | second person masculine pluralStrong's 7272: A foot, a step, the pudendaYou will notלֹ֥א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nomournתִסְפְּד֖וּ (ṯis·pə·ḏū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 5594: To tear the hair and beat the breasts, to lament, to wailorוְלֹ֣א (wə·lō)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noweep,תִבְכּ֑וּ (ṯiḇ·kū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 1058: To weep, to bemoanbut you will waste awayוּנְמַקֹּתֶם֙ (ū·nə·maq·qō·ṯem)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 4743: To melt, to flow, dwindle, vanishbecause of your sinsבַּעֲוֺנֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (ba·‘ă·wō·nō·ṯê·ḵem)Preposition-b | Noun - common plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 5771: Iniquity, guilt, punishment for iniquityand groanוּנְהַמְתֶּ֖ם (ū·nə·ham·tem)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 5098: To growl, groanamongאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toyourselves.אָחִֽיו׃ (’ā·ḥîw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 251: A brother, )Jump to PreviousEvil-Doing Feet Groan Head-Dresses Heads Howled Iniquities Lamentation Moan Mourn Pine Punishment Rot Sandals Shoes Sins Sorrow Tires Towards Turbans Waste Wasted Wasting Weep Weeping
