Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(60) I will remember my covenant.--The remembrance of God's covenant is made the basis of His mercy to His penitent people (Leviticus 26:42-45) from the beginning, and it is often spoken of as an everlasting covenant. In the New Testament (Luke 1:54-55; Luke 1:72-73, &c.) this covenant is regarded as fulfilled in the Christian dispensation. At the same time, the Christian covenant is described as new in Jeremiah 31:31-34; it was both the continuation and designed fulfilment of the old, and in its superiority and plainer revelation of the Divine will was new. Hence the contrast between My covenant here and Thy covenant in the following verse. The covenant to be afterwards established shall be "an everlasting covenant."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewBut Iאֲנִ֧י (’ă·nî)Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 589: Iwill rememberוְזָכַרְתִּ֨י (wə·zā·ḵar·tî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 2142: To mark, to remember, to mention, to be malethe covenantבְּרִיתִ֛י (bə·rî·ṯî)Noun - feminine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 1285: A covenantI made with youאוֹתָ֖ךְ (’ō·w·ṯāḵ)Preposition | second person feminine singularStrong's 854: Nearness, near, with, by, at, amongin the daysבִּימֵ֣י (bî·mê)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 3117: A dayof your youth,נְעוּרָ֑יִךְ (nə·‘ū·rā·yiḵ)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person feminine singularStrong's 5271: Youth, the state, the personsand I will establishוַהֲקִמוֹתִ֥י (wa·hă·qi·mō·w·ṯî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 6965: To arise, stand up, standan everlasting covenant with you.עוֹלָֽם׃ (‘ō·w·lām)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5769: Concealed, eternity, frequentatively, alwaysJump to PreviousAge-During Agreement Covenant Establish Established Eternal Everlasting Mind Nevertheless Remember Remembered Young Youth
