Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(19) Unto the people of the land,--i.e., of the land of Chaldaea: Ezekiel's fellow-captives. All these prophecies, though concerning Jerusalem and its people, were immediately addressed to the exiles, and their teaching was primarily for them. It is not unlikely, however, as St. Jerome says, that all these prophecies of Ezekiel were sent to Jerusalem, and the corresponding utterances of Jeremiah, made in Jerusalem, were sent to Chaldaea. From all that is therein.--The margin, which is the literal rendering, explains this: "The land shall be stripped of its richness and excellence, of all that makes it desirable."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThen tellוְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (wə·’ā·mar·tā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, saythe peopleעַ֣ם (‘am)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5971: A people, a tribe, troops, attendants, a flockof the landאַדְמַ֣ת (’aḏ·maṯ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 776: Earth, landthat this is whatכֹּֽה־ (kōh-)AdverbStrong's 3541: Like this, thus, here, nowthe Lordאֲדֹנָ֨י (’ă·ḏō·nāy)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 136: The LordGODיְהוִ֜ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHsaysאָמַר֩ (’ā·mar)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayabout those livingלְיוֹשְׁבֵ֤י (lə·yō·wō·šə·ḇê)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryin Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (yə·rū·šā·lim)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 3389: Jerusalem -- probably 'foundation of peace', capital city of all Israel[and] inאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe landהָאָ֡רֶץ (hā·’ā·reṣ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 127: Ground, landof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his desc‘They will eatיֹאכֵ֔לוּ (yō·ḵê·lū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 398: To eattheir breadלַחְמָם֙ (laḥ·mām)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 3899: Food, bread, grainwith anxietyבִּדְאָגָ֣ה (biḏ·’ā·ḡāh)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 1674: Anxiety, anxious careand drinkיִשְׁתּ֑וּ (yiš·tū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 8354: To imbibetheir waterוּמֵֽימֵיהֶ֖ם (ū·mê·mê·hem)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 4325: Water, juice, urine, semenin dread,בְּשִׁמָּמ֣וֹן (bə·šim·mā·mō·wn)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 8078: Stupefactionforלְמַ֜עַן (lə·ma·‘an)ConjunctionStrong's 4616: Purpose -- intenttheir landאַרְצָהּ֙ (’ar·ṣāh)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landwill be strippedתֵּשַׁ֤ם (tê·šam)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 3456: To be desolateof everything in itמִמְּלֹאָ֔הּ (mim·mə·lō·’āh)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 4393: Fullness, that which fillsbecause of the violenceמֵחֲמַ֖ס (mê·ḥă·mas)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 2555: Violence, wrong, by meton, unjust gainof allכָּֽל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythose who dwellהַיֹּשְׁבִ֥ים (hay·yō·šə·ḇîm)Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryin it.בָּֽהּ׃ (bāh)Preposition | third person feminine singularStrong's 0: 0Jump to PreviousAnxiety Appalment Astonishment Bread Carefulness Desolate Despoiled Dismay Drink Dwell Eat Fearfulness Inhabitants Israel Jerusalem Solicitude Therein Violence Water
