Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(6) The God of thy father.--It is generally agreed that "father" is put collectively here for "forefathers." (Comp. Genesis 31:42.) Hence St. Stephen, quoting the passage, renders it, "I am the God of thy fathers" (Acts 7:32).The God of Abraham.--Primarily, no doubt, the meaning was, the God who was worshipped by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; but the form of the expression, "the God of Abraham," &c., indicated the continued existence of the patriarchs after death, since He can only be the God of existent, and not of nonexistent things. (See Matthew 22:32.)Moses hid his face, with the same feeling which made Jacob exclaim, "How dreadful is this place" (Genesis 28:17). Though nothing was to be seen but an appearance as of material fire, the knowledge that God was there rendered the fire awful.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThen He said,וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say“Iאָנֹכִי֙ (’ā·nō·ḵî)Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 595: Iam the Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י (’ĕ·lō·hê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeof your father,אָבִ֔יךָ (’ā·ḇî·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 1: Fatherthe Godאֱלֹהֵ֧י (’ĕ·lō·hê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeof Abraham,אַבְרָהָ֛ם (’aḇ·rā·hām)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 85: Abraham -- 'exalted father', the father of the Jewish nationthe Godאֱלֹהֵ֥י (’ĕ·lō·hê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeof Isaac,יִצְחָ֖ק (yiṣ·ḥāq)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3327: Isaac -- 'he laughs', son of Abraham and Sarahand the Godוֵאלֹהֵ֣י (wê·lō·hê)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeof Jacob.”יַעֲקֹ֑ב (ya·‘ă·qōḇ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3290: Jacob -- a son of Isaac, also his descAt this, Mosesמֹשֶׁה֙ (mō·šeh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 4872: Moses -- a great Israelite leader, prophet and lawgiverhidוַיַּסְתֵּ֤ר (way·yas·têr)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5641: To hide, concealhis face,פָּנָ֔יו (pā·nāw)Noun - common plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 6440: The faceforכִּ֣י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionhe was afraidיָרֵ֔א (yā·rê)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3372: To fear, to revere, caus, to frightento lookמֵהַבִּ֖יט (mê·hab·bîṭ)Preposition-m | Verb - Hifil - Infinitive constructStrong's 5027: To scan, look intently at, to regardatאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toGod.הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeJump to PreviousAbraham Afraid Covered Face Fathers Fear Hid Hideth Isaac Jacob Kept Moreover Moses Towards
