Pulpit Commentary

Pulpit CommentaryVerse 21. - Thou shalt take of the blood... . and of the anointing oil. Apparently, this is the only unction that the ordinary priests were to receive. (Compare Leviticus 8:30.) The mixture of the blood with the oil is unusual, and presents some difficulties; but perhaps it is best to view it as symbolising the intimate union which exists between justification and sanctification - the atoning blood, and the sanctifying grace of the Holy Spirit. And sprinkle it. The verb is different from that used in ver. 16, and is rightly rendered, "sprinkle." He shall be hallowed and his garments. As the garments shared in the sprinkling, they shared also, so far as was possible, in the consecration. It was hence especially that they became "holy garments."

Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(21) Take of the blood . . . and of the anointing oil.--The twofold sprinkling, with blood and with oil, denoted the necessity of a twofold holiness--that of justification by the atoning blood of Christ, and that of sanctification by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The anointing which is here spoken of seems to have been the only anointing received by the sons of Aaron. (See Leviticus 8:30.)
