Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(10) The glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.--The Hebrew, as at present pointed, has "in a cloud," but there can be no reasonable doubt that the "pillar of the cloud" is meant. It was before this that they had been required to appear (Exodus 16:9), and from this almost certainly that some bright radiance was now made to stream forth. The object was at once to rebuke their murmurings, and to uphold the authority of Moses and Aaron.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAnd as soonוַיְהִ֗י (way·hî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, beas Aaronאַהֲרֹן֙ (’a·hă·rōn)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 175: Aaron -- an elder brother of Mosesspokeכְּדַבֵּ֤ר (kə·ḏab·bêr)Preposition-k | Verb - Piel - Infinitive constructStrong's 1696: To arrange, to speak, to subduetoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe wholeכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everycongregationעֲדַ֣ת (‘ă·ḏaṯ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 5712: A stated assemblageof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descthey lookedוַיִּפְנ֖וּ (way·yip̄·nū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 6437: To turn, to face, appear, looktowardאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe desert,הַמִּדְבָּ֑ר (ham·miḏ·bār)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4057: A pasture, a desert, speechand thereוְהִנֵּה֙ (wə·hin·nêh)Conjunctive waw | InterjectionStrong's 2009: Lo! behold!in a cloudבֶּעָנָֽן׃ (be·‘ā·nān)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6051: A cloud, the nimbus, thunder-cloudthe gloryכְּב֣וֹד (kə·ḇō·wḏ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3519: Weight, splendor, copiousnessof the LORDיְהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelappeared.נִרְאָ֖ה (nir·’āh)Verb - Nifal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7200: To seeJump to PreviousAaron Appeared Appearing Assembly Children Cloud Community Congregation Desert Direction Eyes Glory Israel Israelite Shining Speaking Talking Towards Turned Waste Whole Wilderness
