Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(23) And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God--i.e., thou shalt eat the second tithe. This was to be done two years; but in the third and sixth years there was a different arrangement (see Deuteronomy 14:28). In the seventh year, which was Sabbatical, there would probably be no tithe, for there was to be no harvest. The profit of the earth was for all, and every one was free to eat at pleasure.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAnd you are to eatוְאָכַלְתָּ֞ (wə·’ā·ḵal·tā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 398: To eata tenthמַעְשַׂ֤ר (ma‘·śar)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4643: Tenth part, titheof your grain,דְּגָֽנְךָ֙ (də·ḡā·nə·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 1715: Corn, grain (of cereals)new wine,תִּֽירֹשְׁךָ֣ (tî·rō·šə·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 8492: Must, fresh grape-juice, fermented wineand oil,וְיִצְהָרֶ֔ךָ (wə·yiṣ·hā·re·ḵā)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 3323: Oil, anointingand the firstbornוּבְכֹרֹ֥ת (ū·ḇə·ḵō·rōṯ)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1062: The firstling of man, beast, primogenitureof your herdsבְּקָרְךָ֖ (bə·qā·rə·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 1241: Beef cattle, ox, a herdand flocks,וְצֹאנֶ֑ךָ (wə·ṣō·ne·ḵā)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 6629: Small cattle, sheep and goats, flockin the presenceלִפְנֵ֣י ׀ (lip̄·nê)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural constructStrong's 6440: The faceof the LORDיְהוָ֣ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHyour Godאֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ (’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeat the placeבַּמָּק֣וֹם (bam·mā·qō·wm)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4725: A standing, a spot, a conditionwhereאֲשֶׁר־ (’ă·šer-)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatHe will chooseיִבְחַר֮ (yiḇ·ḥar)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 977: To try, selectas a dwellingלְשַׁכֵּ֣ן (lə·šak·kên)Preposition-l | Verb - Piel - Infinitive constructStrong's 7931: To settle down, abide, dwellfor His Name,שְׁמ֣וֹ (šə·mōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 8034: A nameso thatלְמַ֣עַן (lə·ma·‘an)ConjunctionStrong's 4616: Purpose -- intentyou may learnתִּלְמַ֗ד (til·maḏ)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 3925: To exercise in, learnto fearלְיִרְאָ֛ה (lə·yir·’āh)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 3372: To fear, to revere, caus, to frightenthe LORDיְהוָ֥ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHyour Godאֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativealways.כָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyJump to PreviousAlways Cause Choose Chooses Corn Dwell Eat Establish Herd Herds Learn Mayest New Oil Presence Tithe Wine
