Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(10) To translate the kingdom.--This sudden expression of Abner's resolve seems to imply that he had before had the matter under consideration, and shows that there was some ground for the reproach of Ish-bosheth. The following verse brings out clearly the utter weakness of Ish-bosheth.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewto transferלְהַֽעֲבִ֥יר (lə·ha·‘ă·ḇîr)Preposition-l | Verb - Hifil - Infinitive constructStrong's 5674: To pass over, through, or by, pass onthe kingdomהַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה (ham·mam·lā·ḵāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4467: Kingdom, sovereignty, dominion, reignfrom the houseמִבֵּ֣ית (mib·bêṯ)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1004: A houseof Saulשָׁא֑וּל (šā·’ūl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 7586: Saul -- first king of Israel, also an Edomite and two Israelitesand to establishוּלְהָקִ֞ים (ū·lə·hā·qîm)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Verb - Hifil - Infinitive constructStrong's 6965: To arise, stand up, standthe throneכִּסֵּ֣א (kis·sê)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3678: Seat of honor, throneof Davidדָוִ֗ד (ḏā·wiḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jesseoverעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descand Judah,יְהוּדָ֔ה (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four Israelitesfrom Danמִדָּ֖ן (mid·dān)Preposition-m | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1835: Dan -- 'judge', a son of Jacob, also a place in Northern Israeltoוְעַד־ (wə·‘aḏ-)Conjunctive waw | PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whileBeersheba.”שָֽׁבַע׃ (šā·ḇa‘)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 884: Beersheba -- 'well of seven', a place in the NegevJump to PreviousBeersheba Beer-Sheba Cause Dan David David's Establish Family Far House Israel Judah Kingdom Raise Ruler Saul Throne Transfer Translate
