Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(25) Built there an altar.--The parallel place in Chronicles states that the tabernacle "and the altar of burnt offering were at that season in the high place at Gibeon," and that David was afraid to go before it "because of the sword of the angel," i.e., the pestilence. It also mentions that when David "offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD," "He answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering." David then fixed upon this as "the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel" (1Chronicles 22:1).Thus, with David's repentance and reconciliation to God after his second great sin closes this narrative and this book. David's reign and life were now substantially ended--a witness to all time of the power of Divine Grace over human infirmity and sin, of God's faithfulness and mercy to those that trust in Him, and of the triumph of an earnest and humble faith notwithstanding some very great and grievous falls.#define description=DESC#define abbreviation=ABBR#define comments=CMTS#define version=3Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAndדָּוִ֤ד (dā·wiḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jessethereשָׁ֨ם (šām)AdverbStrong's 8033: There, then, thitherhe builtוַיִּבֶן֩ (way·yi·ḇen)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1129: To buildan altarמִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ (miz·bê·aḥ)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4196: An altarto the LORDלַֽיהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israeland offeredוַיַּ֥עַל (way·ya·‘al)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5927: To ascend, in, activelyburnt offeringsעֹל֖וֹת (‘ō·lō·wṯ)Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 5930: Whole burnt offeringand peace offerings.וּשְׁלָמִ֑ים (ū·šə·lā·mîm)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 8002: A sacrifice for alliance or friendship, peace offeringThen the LORDיְהוָה֙ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelanswered the prayersוַיֵּעָתֵ֤ר (way·yê·‘ā·ṯêr)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6279: To burn incense in worship, intercedeon behalf of the land,לָאָ֔רֶץ (lā·’ā·reṣ)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landand the plagueהַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה (ham·mag·gê·p̄āh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4046: A blow, slaughter, plague, pestilenceonמֵעַ֥ל (mê·‘al)Preposition-mStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descwas halted.וַתֵּעָצַ֥ר (wat·tê·‘ā·ṣar)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 6113: To inclose, to hold back, to maintain, rule, assembleJump to PreviousAltar Averted Built Burnt Burnt-Offerings Causeth David Disease Ear End Entreated Fellowship Heeded Held Intreated Israel Land Making Moved Offered Offerings Peace Peace-Offerings Plague Prayer Propitious Sacrificed Stopped Supplications
