Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(36) Thy gentleness.--This is the translation of the word in Psalm 18:35. The word here, which differs very slightly, and is otherwise unknown, is undoubtedly meant for it; if taken as it stands it would, by its etymology, mean thy answering, viz., to the prayers offered. The psalm inserts between the two clauses of the verse, "and thy right hand hath holden me up."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewYou have givenוַתִּתֶּן־ (wat·tit·ten-)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setmeלִ֖י (lî)Preposition | first person common singularStrong's Hebrew Your shieldמָגֵ֣ן (mā·ḡên)Noun - common singular constructStrong's 4043: A shield, a protector, the scaly hide of the crocodileof salvation;יִשְׁעֶ֑ךָ (yiš·‘e·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 3468: Deliverance, rescue, salvation, safety, welfareand Your gentlenessוַעֲנֹתְךָ֖ (wa·‘ă·nō·ṯə·ḵā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 6031: To be bowed down or afflictedexalts me.תַּרְבֵּֽנִי׃ (tar·bê·nî)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - second person masculine singular | first person common singularStrong's 7235: To be or become much, many or greatJump to PreviousBreastplate Condescending Condescension Gentleness Givest Great Help Lowliness Makes Maketh Mercy Salvation Shield Stoop Victory
