Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(3) There is no man deputed of the king.--There is no official hearer appointed. It was impossible for the king to hear every case in detail; certain persons were therefore appointed to hear causes and report the facts to the king, who thereupon pronounced his judgment. Absalom uses the same arts which have been used by the demagogue in all ages. He does not accuse the king himself of wrong, but insinuates that the system of government is detective, and expresses his own earnest wish to set things right.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAbsalomאַבְשָׁל֔וֹם (’aḇ·šā·lō·wm)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 53: Absalom -- 'my father is peace', two Israeliteswould say,וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say“Look,רְאֵ֥ה (rə·’êh)Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine singularStrong's 7200: To seeyour claimsדְבָרֶ֖ךָ (ḏə·ḇā·re·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causeare goodטוֹבִ֣ים (ṭō·w·ḇîm)Adjective - masculine pluralStrong's 2896: Pleasant, agreeable, goodand right,וּנְכֹחִ֑ים (ū·nə·ḵō·ḥîm)Conjunctive waw | Adjective - masculine pluralStrong's 5228: Straightforward, equitable, correct, integritybut the kingהַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (ham·me·leḵ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4428: A king[has] no deputyאֵין־ (’ên-)AdverbStrong's 369: A non-entity, a negative particleto hearוְשֹׁמֵ֥עַ (wə·šō·mê·a‘)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlyyou.”לְךָ֖ (lə·ḵā)Preposition | second person masculine singularStrong's Hebrew Jump to PreviousAbsalom Ab'salom Appointed Cause Claims Good Hear Hearing Hearkening Listens Matters Part Proper Representative Right Straightforward True.
