Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(8) For the cherubims spread forth their wings.--Rather, And the cherubim were spreading forth wings. Kings has for (ki); making the sentence an explanation of the last clause of 2Chronicles 5:7.Covered.--Kings has the technical term for the cherubim "covering" the ark (Exodus 25:20; 1Chronicles 28:18). In Hebrew writing, the difference is marked by the transposition of a single letter. Perhaps, therefore, our present reading is a clerical error.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewForוַיִּהְי֤וּ (way·yih·yū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, bethe cherubimהַכְּרוּבִים֙ (hak·kə·rū·ḇîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 3742: Probably an order of angelic beingsspreadפֹּרְשִׂ֣ים (pō·rə·śîm)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 6566: To break apart, dispersetheir wingsכְּנָפַ֔יִם (kə·nā·p̄a·yim)Noun - fdStrong's 3671: An edge, extremity, a wing, a flap, a quarter, a pinnacleoverעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe placeמְק֖וֹם (mə·qō·wm)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4725: A standing, a spot, a conditionof the arkהָאָר֑וֹן (hā·’ā·rō·wn)Article | Noun - common singularStrong's 727: A chest, arkand overshadowedוַיְכַסּ֧וּ (way·ḵas·sū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 3680: To plump, fill up hollows, to coverthe arkהָאָר֥וֹן (hā·’ā·rō·wn)Article | Noun - common singularStrong's 727: A chest, arkandוְעַל־ (wə·‘al-)Conjunctive waw | PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstits poles.בַּדָּ֖יו (bad·dāw)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 905: Separation, a part of the body, branch of a, tree, bar for, carrying, chief ofJump to PreviousArk Carrying Cherubim Cherubs Cover Covered Covering Forth Outstretched Poles Rods Spread Spreading Staffs Staves Thereof Wings
