Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(22) For Amon sacrificed.--Literally, and to all the carven images which Manasseh his father had made did Amon sacrifice. (Comp. 2Kings 21:21, "and he walked in all the way wherein his father had walked, and served the idols which his father had served, and worshipped them." Idols in the above passage is gillulim, "dunglings," a term nowhere used by the chronicler.) The statement of our text seems to imply that the "carven images" made by Manasseh had not been destroyed, but only cast aside. (See Note on 2Chronicles 33:15.) It argues a defect of judgment to say with Reuss that the reforms of Manasseh are rendered doubtful by it. The whole history is a succession of reforms followed by relapses; and the words of the sacred writer need not be supposed to mean that the images which Amon worshipped were the very ones which his penitent father had discarded, but only images of the same imaginary gods.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAnd he didוַיַּ֤עַשׂ (way·ya·‘aś)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6213: To do, makeevilהָרַע֙ (hā·ra‘)Article | Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 7451: Bad, evilin the sightבְּעֵינֵ֣י (bə·‘ê·nê)Preposition-b | Noun - cdcStrong's 5869: An eye, a fountainof the LORD,יְהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelasכַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (ka·’ă·šer)Preposition-k | Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thathis fatherאָבִ֑יו (’ā·ḇîw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 1: FatherManassehמְנַשֶּׁ֣ה (mə·naš·šeh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 4519: Manasseh -- 'causing to forget', a son of Joseph, also a king of Judah, also two Israeliteshad done.עָשָׂ֖ה (‘ā·śāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6213: To do, makeAmonאָמ֖וֹן (’ā·mō·wn)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 526: Amon -- 'masterworkman', three Israelitesservedוַיַּֽעַבְדֵֽם׃ (way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏêm)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular | third person masculine pluralStrong's 5647: To work, to serve, till, enslaveand sacrificedזִבַּ֥ח (zib·baḥ)Verb - Piel - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2076: To slaughter for sacrificeto allוּֽלְכָל־ (ū·lə·ḵāl-)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe idolsהַפְּסִילִ֗ים (hap·pə·sî·lîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 6456: An idol, imagethatאֲשֶׁ֤ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thathis fatherאָבִ֔יו (’ā·ḇîw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 1: FatherManassehמְנַשֶּׁ֣ה (mə·naš·šeh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 4519: Manasseh -- 'causing to forget', a son of Joseph, also a king of Judah, also two Israeliteshad made,עָשָׂה֙ (‘ā·śāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6213: To do, makeJump to PreviousAmon Carved Engraved Evil Eyes Graven Idols Images Manasseh Manas'seh Offered Offerings Sacrificed Sacrifices Servant Served Serveth Sight Worshiped
