Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(10) Unto the city.--The name of the city where Samuel and Saul first met in this strange way is not given. Still, the impression which the narrative leaves on the mind is that it was Samuel's usual residence--"Ramah." We know Samuel had built an altar to the Lord at Ramah (1Samuel 7:17); on the day of Saul's arrival there was a great sacrifice taking place on the altar of the high place of the city. Again, in this nameless city the seer had a house of his own (see 1Samuel 9:18; 1Samuel 9:25). Samuel, too, was known to Saul's servant as dwelling in this place.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew“Good,”ט֥וֹב (ṭō·wḇ)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 2896: Pleasant, agreeable, goodsaidוַיֹּ֨אמֶר (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, saySaulשָׁא֧וּל (šā·’ūl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 7586: Saul -- first king of Israel, also an Edomite and two Israelitesto his servant.לְנַעֲר֛וֹ (lə·na·‘ă·rōw)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 5288: A boy, lad, youth, retainer“Come,לְכָ֣ה ׀ (lə·ḵāh)Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 1980: To go, come, walklet us go.”נֵלֵ֑כָה (nê·lê·ḵāh)Verb - Qal - Imperfect Cohortative - first person common pluralStrong's 1980: To go, come, walkSo they set outוַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ (way·yê·lə·ḵū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1980: To go, come, walkforאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe cityהָעִ֔יר (hā·‘îr)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5892: Excitementwhereשָׁ֖ם (šām)AdverbStrong's 8033: There, then, thitherthe manאִ֥ישׁ (’îš)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personof God was.הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeJump to PreviousCity Let's Saul Servant Word Young
