Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) To return into the land of the Philistines.--No doubt David and his officers rejoiced at their escaping the terrible alternative of either turning traitors to the kindly man who had so hospitably received them in their distress, or of appearing in arms with the Philistines when they came into collision with the Israelites under Saul. But they little thought in how sore a danger their wives and children and homes were at this juncture. Their release from the Philistine army was not a moment too soon to save these.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewSo Davidדָּוִ֜ד (dā·wiḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jesseand his menוַֽאֲנָשָׁיו֙ (wa·’ă·nā·šāw)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 582: Man, mankindgot up earlyוַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם (way·yaš·kêm)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7925: To load up, to start early in the morningin the morningבַּבֹּ֔קֶר (bab·bō·qer)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1242: Dawn, morningto returnלָשׁ֖וּב (lā·šūḇ)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 7725: To turn back, in, to retreat, againtoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe landאֶ֣רֶץ (’e·reṣ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 776: Earth, landof the Philistines.פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים (pə·liš·tîm)Noun - proper - masculine pluralStrong's 6430: Philistines -- inhabitants of PhilistiaAnd the Philistinesוּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (ū·p̄ə·liš·tîm)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine pluralStrong's 6430: Philistines -- inhabitants of Philistiawent upעָל֥וּ (‘ā·lū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 5927: To ascend, in, activelyto Jezreel.יִזְרְעֶֽאל׃ (yiz·rə·‘el)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 3157: Jezreel -- 'God sows', two Israelites, also two cities in Israel, also a valley in Northern IsraelJump to PreviousDavid Depart Early Jezreel Jizreel Morning Philistines Riseth Rose Turn
