Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(10) David said furthermore.--David suggests three possible cases in which the Divine arm might smite the "anointed of Jehovah." The first, the Lord "shall smite him" by some sudden death from disease--no doubt, the recent death of Nabal was in his mind; the second by what is termed "natural death;" and the third by some blow received in battle. The idea of an arrow winged by some unseen hand was evidently here in the speaker's thoughts.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewDavidדָּוִד֙ (dā·wiḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jesseadded,וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say“As surely as the LORDיְהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israellives,חַי־ (ḥay-)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2416: Alive, raw, fresh, strong, lifethe LORD Himselfיְהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelwill strike him down;יִגָּפֶ֑נּוּ (yig·gā·p̄en·nū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 5062: To push, gore, defeat, stub, inflicteitherאֽוֹ־ (’ōw-)ConjunctionStrong's 176: Desire, ifhis dayיוֹמ֤וֹ (yō·w·mōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 3117: A daywill comeיָבוֹא֙ (yā·ḇō·w)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goand he will die,וָמֵ֔ת (wā·mêṯ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 4191: To die, to killorא֧וֹ (’ōw)ConjunctionStrong's 176: Desire, ifhe will goיֵרֵ֖ד (yê·rêḏ)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3381: To come or go down, descendinto battleבַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה (ḇam·mil·ḥā·māh)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4421: A battle, warand perish.וְנִסְפָּֽה׃ (wə·nis·pāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5595: To sweep or snatch away, catch upJump to PreviousBattle Consumed David Death Descend Destruction Die Died Dies Either Except Natural Perish Smite Strike Surely Swept Time
