Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(8) That all of you have conspired.--The unhappy, jealous spirit had obtained such complete mastery over the unhappy king that now he suspected even the chosen men of his own tribe. All his tried favourites, the men of his own house, even his gallant son, he charged with leaning towards David the traitor, his supplanter in the hearts of Israel. My son hath made a league.--It would seem as though Saul had learned something of what passed between Jonathan and David when they met for that farewell interview at the memorable New Moon feast; the words respecting the covenant between the two being too pointed and marked to refer only to the well-known ancient friendship between the prince and the son of Jesse. There is none of you that is sorry for me.--These words of the sad king--tormented as he was by an evil spirit, ever whispering doubt and jealous thoughts into the poor diseased mind--are here strangely real and pathetic.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewIs that why allכֻּלְּכֶ֜ם (kul·lə·ḵem)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyof you have conspiredקְשַׁרְתֶּ֨ם (qə·šar·tem)Verb - Qal - Perfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 7194: To tie, gird, confine, compact, in love, leagueagainst me?עָלַ֗י (‘ā·lay)Preposition | first person common singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstNot one [of you]וְאֵין־ (wə·’ên-)Conjunctive waw | AdverbStrong's 369: A non-entity, a negative particletoldגֹּלֶ֤ה (gō·leh)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 1540: To denude, to exile, to revealme thatאָזְנִי֙ (’ā·zə·nî)Noun - feminine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 241: Broadness, the earmy own sonבְּנִ֣י (bə·nî)Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 1121: A sonhad made a covenantבִּכְרָת־ (biḵ·rāṯ-)Preposition-b | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 3772: To cut, to destroy, consume, to covenantwithעִם־ (‘im-)PrepositionStrong's 5973: With, equally withJesse’sיִשַׁ֔י (yi·šay)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3448: Jesse -- father of Davidson.בֶּן־ (ben-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonNot oneוְאֵין־ (wə·’ên-)Conjunctive waw | AdverbStrong's 369: A non-entity, a negative particleof youמִכֶּ֛ם (mik·kem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's 4480: A part of, from, out ofhas shown concernחֹלֶ֥ה (ḥō·leh)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 2470: To be weak or sickfor meעָלַ֖י (‘ā·lay)Preposition | first person common singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstor revealedוְגֹלֶ֣ה (wə·ḡō·leh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 1540: To denude, to exile, to revealto meאָזְנִ֑י (’ā·zə·nî)Noun - feminine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 241: Broadness, the earthatכִּ֣י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionmy sonבְּנִ֨י (bə·nî)Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 1121: A sonhas stirred upהֵקִים֩ (hê·qîm)Verb - Hifil - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6965: To arise, stand up, standmy own servantעַבְדִּ֥י (‘aḇ·dî)Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 5650: Slave, servantto lie in waitלְאֹרֵ֖ב (lə·’ō·rêḇ)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 693: To lie in waitagainst me,עָלַ֛י (‘ā·lay)Preposition | first person common singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstas is the case today.?כַּיּ֥וֹם (kay·yō·wm)Preposition-k, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3117: A dayJump to PreviousConspired Disclosed Discloses Discloseth Jesse League Makes Servant Showeth Sorry Stirred Wait
