Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(49) And smote the Philistine in the forehead.--The LXX. add the words "through the helm" The Greek translators could not understand the fact of the forehead being unprotected. But the head-pieces of the armour then do not appear to have possessed "visors;" the face was covered with the heavy shield, which was borne, we are told (1Samuel 17:7), before him. No doubt the Philistine, utterly despising his youthful "unarmed" antagonist, advanced towards him without using, as was customary, the face protection of the shield.Slinging stones had been brought among the Israelites to an extraordinary perfection. Many years before this time we read that in the tribe of Benjamin were "700 chosen men left-handed; every one could sling stones at an hair's breadth, and not miss" (Judges 20:16).A work by W. Vischer, on "Ancient Slings" (Basel, 1866), quoted by Lange, speaks of slingers who could hit the part of the enemy's face at which they aimed.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThen Davidדָּוִ֨ד (dā·wiḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jessereachedוַיִּשְׁלַח֩ (way·yiš·laḥ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7971: To send away, for, outintoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tohis bag,הַכֶּ֗לִי (hak·ke·lî)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3627: Something prepared, any apparatustookוַיִּקַּ֨ח (way·yiq·qaḥ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3947: To takeoutמִשָּׁ֥ם (miš·šām)Preposition-m | AdverbStrong's 8033: There, then, thithera stoneאֶ֙בֶן֙ (’e·ḇen)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 68: A stoneand slung it,וַיְקַלַּ֔ע (way·qal·la‘)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7049: To sling, hurl forthstrikingוַיַּ֥ךְ (way·yaḵ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5221: To strikethe Philistineהַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י (hap·pə·liš·tî)Article | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6430: Philistines -- inhabitants of Philistiaonאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe forehead.מִצְח֑וֹ (miṣ·ḥōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 4696: Brow, foreheadThe stoneהָאֶ֙בֶן֙ (hā·’e·ḇen)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 68: A stonesankוַתִּטְבַּ֤ע (wat·tiṭ·ba‘)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 2883: To sink, sink downinto his forehead,בְּמִצְח֔וֹ (bə·miṣ·ḥōw)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 4696: Brow, foreheadand he fellוַיִּפֹּ֥ל (way·yip·pōl)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5307: To fall, liefacedownפָּנָ֖יו (pā·nāw)Noun - common plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 6440: The faceon the ground.אָֽרְצָה׃ (’ā·rə·ṣāh)Noun - feminine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landJump to PreviousBag Band Brow David Deep Earth Hand Hurled Leather Philistine Putteth Reaching Sank Sinketh Sling Slung Smiteth Smote Stone Straight Struck Sunk Thence Vessel
