Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(31) He sent for him.--No doubt much more was said by the brave shepherd boy than the compiler of the history has preserved for us in the brief account here. David felt that supernatural strength had been communicated to him by the Spirit of God, which came upon him on the day of his anointing (1Samuel 16:13), and it is probable that he had openly avowed his earnest desire of meeting the dreaded foe face to face. This had been reported to Saul.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewNow David'sדָּוִ֑ד (dā·wiḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jessewordsדִּבֶּ֣ר (dib·ber)Verb - Piel - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1696: To arrange, to speak, to subduewere overheardוַיְּשָּֽׁמְעוּ֙‪‬ (way·yəš·šā·mə·‘ū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlyand reportedוַיַּגִּ֥דוּ (way·yag·gi·ḏū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5046: To be conspicuoustoלִפְנֵֽי־ (lip̄·nê-)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 6440: The faceSaul,שָׁא֖וּל (šā·’ūl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 7586: Saul -- first king of Israel, also an Edomite and two Israeliteswho called for him.וַיִּקָּחֵֽהוּ׃ (way·yiq·qā·ḥê·hū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 3947: To takeJump to PreviousDavid Declare Heard Hearing Overheard Receiveth Rehearsed Repeated Reported Saul Word Words
