Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(22) Until the child be weaned.--Weaning, we know, took place very late among the Hebrews. From 2 Maccabees 7:27, it appears that Hebrew mothers were in the habit of suckling their children for three years. The mother proposed, when the weaning had taken place, to leave her son as a servant of the sanctuary, there to remain all his life.On the late period of weaning among the Oriental nations, Kalisch refers to the Persian custom of suckling boys two years and two months, and girls two years.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewbut Hannahוְחַנָּ֖ה (wə·ḥan·nāh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 2584: Hannah -- mother of Samueldid notלֹ֣א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nogo.עָלָ֑תָה (‘ā·lā·ṯāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 5927: To ascend, in, actively“Afterעַ֣ד (‘aḏ)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whilethe boyהַנַּ֙עַר֙ (han·na·‘ar)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5288: A boy, lad, youth, retaineris weaned,”יִגָּמֵ֤ל (yig·gā·mêl)Verb - Nifal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1580: To deal fully or adequately with, deal out to, wean, ripenshe saidאָמְרָ֣ה (’ā·mə·rāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayto her husband,לְאִישָׁ֗הּ (lə·’î·šāh)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male person“I will takeוַהֲבִאֹתִ֗יו (wa·hă·ḇi·’ō·ṯîw)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, gohim to appearוְנִרְאָה֙ (wə·nir·’āh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7200: To seebeforeפְּנֵ֣י (pə·nê)Noun - common plural constructStrong's 6440: The facethe LORDיְהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israeland to stayוְיָ֥שַׁב (wə·yā·šaḇ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marrythereשָׁ֖ם (šām)AdverbStrong's 8033: There, then, thitheralways.”עַד־ (‘aḏ-)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whileJump to PreviousAbide Age Always Appear Appeared Boy Breast Child Hannah Husband Live Presence Present Soon Wait Weaned Youth
