Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(27) His brethren had not many children.--His brethren, i.e., his fellow-tribesmen. The other Simeonite clans (Numbers 26:12), are meant.Neither did all their family multiply.--Rather, nor did they multiply their whole clan. The word clan (mishpahath) is here used in the wider sense of tribe. This remark is borne out by what we otherwise know of the tribe of Simeon. It was never historically important, and appears to have ultimately been absorbed by Judah, within which its domain was included (Joshua 19:1). (Comp. Genesis 49:7 : "I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.")Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewShimeiוּלְשִׁמְעִ֞י (ū·lə·šim·‘î)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 8096: Shimei -- the name of a number of Israeliteshad sixteenשִׁשָּׁ֤ה (šiš·šāh)Number - masculine singularStrong's 8337: Six (a cardinal number)sonsבָּנִ֨ים (bā·nîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 1121: A sonand sixשֵׁ֔שׁ (šêš)Number - feminine singularStrong's 8337: Six (a cardinal number)daughters,וּבָנ֣וֹת (ū·ḇā·nō·wṯ)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 1323: A daughterbut his brothersוּלְאֶחָ֕יו (ū·lə·’e·ḥāw)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 251: A brother, )did notאֵ֖ין (’ên)AdverbStrong's 369: A non-entity, a negative particlehave manyרַבִּ֑ים (rab·bîm)Adjective - masculine pluralStrong's 7227: Much, many, greatchildren,בָּנִ֣ים (bā·nîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 1121: A sonso their wholeוְכֹל֙ (wə·ḵōl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyclanמִשְׁפַּחְתָּ֔ם (miš·paḥ·tām)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 4940: A family, circle of relatives, a class, a species, sort, a tribe, peopledid notלֹ֥א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nobecome as numerousהִרְבּ֖וּ (hir·bū)Verb - Hifil - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 7235: To be or become much, many or greatasעַד־ (‘aḏ-)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whilethe sonsבְּנֵ֥י (bə·nê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Judah.יְהוּדָֽה׃ (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four IsraelitesJump to PreviousChildren Clan Daughters Entire Families Family Judah Multiplied Multiply Numerous Shimei Shim'e-I Six Sixteen Small
