Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(24) For the full price.--Samuel simply, "At a price" (different word). The next clause does not appear in Samuel, but may well be original.Nor offer burnt offerings without cost.--So Samuel: "Nor will I offer to the Lord my God burnt offerings without cost." It was of the essence of sacrifice to surrender something valued in order to win from God a greater good (Ewald).Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew“No,”לֹ֕א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, norepliedוַיֹּ֨אמֶר (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayKingהַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (ham·me·leḵ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4428: A kingDavid,דָּוִיד֙ (dā·wîḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jesse“I insist on payingקָנֹ֥ה (qā·nōh)Verb - Qal - Infinitive absoluteStrong's 7069: To erect, create, to procure, by purchase, to ownthe fullמָלֵ֑א (mā·lê)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 4392: Full, filling, fulness, fullyprice,בְּכֶ֣סֶף (bə·ḵe·sep̄)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3701: Silver, moneyforכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionI will notלֹא־ (lō-)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, notakeאֶשָּׂ֤א (’eś·śā)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 5375: To lift, carry, takefor the LORDלַיהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelwhatאֲשֶׁר־ (’ă·šer-)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatbelongs to youלְךָ֙ (lə·ḵā)Preposition | second person masculine singularStrong's Hebrew or offerוְהַעֲל֥וֹת (wə·ha·‘ă·lō·wṯ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Infinitive constructStrong's 5927: To ascend, in, activelyburnt offeringsעוֹלָ֖ה (‘ō·w·lāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5930: Whole burnt offeringthat cost me nothing.”חִנָּֽם׃ (ḥin·nām)AdverbStrong's 2600: Gratis, devoid of cost, reason, advantageJump to PreviousAraunah Burned Burnt Burnt-Offering Burnt-Offerings Buy Case Cost Costs David Full Insist Money Offer Offering Offerings Ornan Paying Payment Price Surely Verily
