Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(8) All the host of the mighty men.--So the Hebrew text. The Hebrew margin and Samuel read "all the host," viz., the mighty men. The "mighty men" (gibborim) were a special corps. (Comp. 1Samuel 23:13; 1Samuel 27:8; 2Samuel 2:3; 2Samuel 16:6; 1Kings 1:8.) Either, then, the term has a general sense here, or we must read, "and the mighty men."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewOn hearing this,וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע (way·yiš·ma‘)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlyDavidדָּוִ֑יד (dā·wîḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jessesentוַיִּשְׁלַח֙ (way·yiš·laḥ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7971: To send away, for, outJoabיוֹאָ֔ב (yō·w·’āḇ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3097: Joab -- 'the LORD is father', three Israelitesandוְאֵ֥ת (wə·’êṯ)Conjunctive waw | Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative casethe entireכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyarmyצָבָ֖א (ṣā·ḇā)Noun - common singularStrong's 6635: A mass of persons, reg, organized for, war, a campaignof mighty men.הַגִּבּוֹרִֽים׃ (hag·gib·bō·w·rîm)Article | Adjective - masculine pluralStrong's 1368: Powerful, warrior, tyrantJump to PreviousArmy David Entire Fighting Fighting-Men Heard Heareth Hearing Host Joab Jo'ab Mighty
