Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(25) O my God.--Samuel: "Jehovah Sabaoth, God of Israel."Hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house.--Literally, hast uncovered the ear of Thy servant, to build him a house. Samuel has the more usual construction: "saying, A house I will build thee." (Comp. 1Samuel 9:15.)Hath found in his heart.--Rather, hath found his heart--i.e., hath taken courage. The noun is expressed in Samuel. As to its omission here, comp. 1Chronicles 14:1. The phrase is unique in Hebrew. To pray.--Samuel adds, "this prayer."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewForכִּ֣י ׀ (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionYou,אַתָּ֣ה (’at·tāh)Pronoun - second person masculine singularStrong's 859: Thou and thee, ye and youmy God,אֱלֹהַ֗י (’ĕ·lō·hay)Noun - masculine plural construct | first person common singularStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativehave revealedגָּלִ֙יתָ֙ (gā·lî·ṯā)Verb - Qal - Perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 1540: To denude, to exile, to revealto Your servantעַבְדְּךָ֔ (‘aḇ·də·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 5650: Slave, servantthat You will buildלִבְנ֥וֹת (liḇ·nō·wṯ)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 1129: To builda houseבָּ֑יִת (bā·yiṯ)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1004: A housefor him.ל֖וֹ (lōw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's Hebrew Thereforeכֵּן֙ (kên)AdverbStrong's 3651: So -- thusYour servantעַבְדְּךָ֔ (‘aḇ·də·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 5650: Slave, servanthas found the courageמָצָ֣א (mā·ṣā)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 4672: To come forth to, appear, exist, to attain, find, acquire, to occur, meet, be presentto prayלְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל (lə·hiṯ·pal·lêl)Preposition-l | Verb - Hitpael - Infinitive constructStrong's 6419: To judge, to intercede, praybefore You.לְפָנֶֽיךָ׃ (lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 6440: The faceJump to PreviousBuild Courage Ear Found Head Heart House Kings Line Prayer Revealed Servant Servant's Uncovered Wilt
